They must wear masks and fill in health-check sheets, and once inside must not cheer loudly or high-five

French Open 2021: Serena Williams to play first night match as Roger Federer returns

Serena Williams will be part of history again on Monday when she plays in the first French Open night-session match, while her fellow veteran Roger Federer also starts his bid to upset the odds at Roland Garros. The 39-year-old Williams is again looking to equal Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles, but arrives in Paris having lost two of her three matches on clay so far this season. She was beaten by eventual champion Naomi Osaka in the Australian Open semi-finals in February, the sixth time she has reached at least the last four of a major since her last Slam success in Melbourne four years ago. Williams will face Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu on Monday evening under the lights on Court Philippe Chatrier - the scene of her only first-round major exit against Virginie Razzano in 2012. The recent signs for Williams, seeded seventh, have not been good, with early defeats in both Rome and Parma earlier this month. But, unsurprisingly, she has remained c

IPL 2021: Steve Smith, David Warner among Australia players released from quarantine in Sydney after leaving India

Sydney: Australian cricketers who fled COVID-ravaged India when the IPL was suspended earlier in May were released from quarantine in Sydney on Monday, after spending 14 days isolating in hotel rooms. Steve Smith, David Warner and Pat Cummins were among the players, coaches and officials who completed the mandatory quarantine period after returning on a charter flight from the Maldives. Warner posted videos on his Instagram account that showed him reuniting with his daughters, before adding a clip of the ocean captioned "It's great to be home". Fast bowler Jason Behrendorff told public broadcaster ABC it was "nice to have some fresh air" after leaving quarantine. "It's always tough being stuck somewhere, and knowing that we're able to get home was a relief, and now we're out of quarantine, I can't wait to get home and see my family," he said. The 38-strong group had been evacuated from India after the Indian Premier League, the

Jason Kokrak holds off Jordan Spieth to capture PGA Colonial crown

Jason Kokrak held off home-region hero Jordan Spieth down the final holes Sunday to win the US PGA Tour Charles Schwab Challenge by two strokes. The 36-year-old American fired a level par 70 in Sunday's final round to finish 72 holes on 14-under 266 at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. Kokrak stumbled with bogeys at the par-4 15th and par-3 16th but closed with back-to-back pars to deny Spieth, who had ended a four-year win drought last month at the Texas Open. "They were definitely rooting for the guy next to me," Kokrak said of Spieth, who hails from nearby Dallas. "We had a little ebb and flow. Grinded it out. Kept patient. Didn't finish the way I wanted to but got the win." Kokrak, who claimed his first US PGA title last October at the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek, became the season's third multiple winner after reigning US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau and 2009 British Open winner Stewart Cink. Spieth, a three-time major winner who won a

Champions League: Thomas Tuchel set to sign new contract after guiding Chelsea to European glory

Porto: While Manchester City had been building towards what they thought was their moment in the Champions League for five years under Pep Guardiola, Chelsea showed with their victory in Saturday's final in Porto what can be achieved in just four months. That is how long has elapsed since Thomas Tuchel became coach, replacing Frank Lampard with Chelsea ninth in the Premier League. The German oversaw an immediate transformation in their fortunes, dragging them into the top four, taking them to the FA Cup final which they lost to Leicester City, and now winning the Champions League. They have beaten Guardiola's City for the third time in six weeks thanks to Kai Havertz's goal, and they are champions of Europe for the second time. Tuchel is set to reap the rewards with a handsome new contract, although whether he will be allowed to put down roots in west London remains to be seen given how managerial cycles tend to go at Stamford Bridge. Once again a mid-season manageria

Euro 2020: Italy manager Roberto Mancini names 28-man provisional squad; Moise Kean misses out

Rome: Italy coach Roberto Mancini announced a provisional 28-man squad for Euro 2020 on Sunday as he prepares for their final pre-tournament friendly against the Czech Republic. Paris Saint-Germain striker Moise Kean was the biggest name to be dropped by Mancini, who kept Kean's PSG teammate Marco Verratti and Inter Milan midfielder Stefano Sensi despite the pair being injured. The latest squad is not final as it will need to be whittled down to 26 by midnight on Tuesday, a day before Mancini's players are set to meet to prepare for the match against the Czech Republic, which kicks off on 4 June. Compared to the 33-man squad Mancini selected ahead of Friday's 7-0 thumping of San Marino, Sunday's squad list also excluded Cagliari goalkeeper Alessio Cragno, Lazio defender Manuel Lazzari, Vincenzo Grifo, Cristiano Biraghi and Gian Marco Ferrari. Veteran Juventus defenders Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci were called up, as well as Jorginho and Emerson Palmieri w

French Open 2021: Pablo Andujar stuns Dominic Thiem in first round; Naomi Osaka threatened with disqualification

Paris: Japanese superstar Naomi Osaka was on Sunday threatened with disqualification from the French Open if she persists with her controversial media boycott, officials said. "We have advised Naomi Osaka that should she continue to ignore her media obligations, she would be exposing herself to possible further code of conduct infringement consequences," said a statement from the four Grand Slam tournaments after the world number two was fined $15,000. "Repeat violations attract tougher sanctions including default from the tournament and the trigger of a major offence investigation that could lead to more substantial fines and future Grand Slam suspensions." Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam title winner and sport's highest-earning female athlete, was sanctioned for refusing to hold a press conference after her opening 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) victory over Romanian world number 63 Patricia Maria Tig. The 23-year-old had said on the eve of the tournament that she would no

Copa America 2021: Tournament left without a host country after CONMEBOL rules out Argentina amid rising COVID-19 cases

Copa America is without a host country only two weeks before kickoff after South American football body CONMEBOL ruled out Argentina amid the rise of COVID-19 cases in the country. The football body said on Sunday on Twitter — and it was later confirmed by an official — that they were analysing “the offer of other nations who showed interest in hosting the continental tournament,” without naming them. Copa America is scheduled to be played between 13 June and 10 July. — CONMEBOL 🇧🇷 (@CONMEBOLBR) May 31, 2021 Argentina are facing a surge of coronavirus infections, with strict lockdown measures imposed last weekend amid a seven-day average of 35,000 cases and 500 deaths. South Africa need to play 'consistent nature of cricket', says new Test captain Dean Elgar

Cape Town: New Test skipper Dean Elgar has called for a return to the "South African" way of playing cricket, which is punctuated by consistent performances, big centuries and five-wicket hauls, as the Proteas look to open a "new chapter" after a prolonged lean phase. South Africa head to the Caribbean for a two-match red-ball series against the West Indies, starting 10 June. "Now that we are in a new chapter, we need to play more cricket and better cricket," Elgar told reporters on Saturday, ahead of the team's departure for St Lucia. "We are conscious that over the last period we haven't been very consistent. "Our skill level hasn't been where it should be. We need to get back to a bit more of a consistent nature of cricket; a bit more of a South African way," Elgar added. Since Mark Boucher took over as coach in 2019, the Proteas have played just eight Tests — largely due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions — losing five

IPL 2021: BCCI in talks with Cricket West Indies to advance start of CPL in order to avoid clash with lucrative league

New Delhi: The BCCI are trying to convince Cricket West Indies to advance the start of the Caribbean Premier League by a week or 10 days to ensure a seamless bubble-to-bubble transfer of players for the IPL's resumption in the UAE come September. Suspended midway into its 14th season owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the BCCI on Saturday approved the resumption of the lucrative Indian Premier League in the UAE in the middle of September. The CPL is scheduled to get underway from 28 August with the final to be played on 19 September, while the remaining part of IPL is likely to be held from 18 September to 10 October, not leaving the players with any time to settle down. "We are in talks with Cricket West Indies. We are hoping that if CPL can be finished a few days in advance, it would help in bubble-to-bubble transfer of all players to Dubai and in time to complete the mandatory three-day quarantine," a BCCI source, privy to the development, told PTI on Sunday. West Indies back to full training after players test negative for COVID-19

Gros Islet (St. Lucia): The West Indies Test squad has returned to full training at its preparatory camp ahead of the home series against South Africa after all players turned out negative for COVID-19 in the latest round of testing. The 30-member squad trained in two groups on Friday and Saturday after testing conducted Thursday reported no positive cases. The squad had been forced to train in smaller groups after Jamaican speedster Marquino Mindley tested positive for COVID-19 last week. "Mindley, who has already returned one negative PCR test on Thursday, remains asymptomatic and in isolation at the team hotel," Cricket West Indies said in a statement on Saturday. "The CWI medical team continues to monitor his progress, as he requires one more negative PCR test before being allowed to re-join the squad." Head coach Phil Simmons said he will now fine tune his squad's preparation ahead of the series against South Africa. "I am happy that we are bac

Champions League final: Tuchel's Chelsea revel in his boldest moment, Guardiola's Man City undone by own intelligence and more

A very good afternoon to you. The football season is officially over in the larger consciousness of the European football followers. The punctuation mark at the end of the protracted sentence is usually marked with an exclamation point — The Champions League final, one that transpired last night between two English giants. But even as Chelsea won 1- 0 against Manchester City in front of 16,500 people inside the Estádio do Dragão, the ending to the season had left a trail of ellipses and more pointedly, a question mark. Firstpost takes a look at the talking points: Chelsea’s proudest moment, Tuchel’s boldest The last time Chelsea won the Champions League it was a glorified hack job. Chelsea fans would be first to admit that. This was different. Thomas Tuchel played the underdog card to perfection as he held his hand close to the chest. The preparation of this match was done equally in the mind, on the tactics board and on the training pitch. Having personal one-on-one tactical s
