Commonwealth Games: Weightlifters Mirabai Chanu, Sanket Sargar and Gururaja earn first medals

Birmingham: Mirabai Chanu was ahead of the rest of the pack even before she had stepped up to the mat in the Women's 49kg category of weightlifting on Saturday. She set a target of 80kg to start her snatch attempt - at least eight kilos clear of the rest. By the time she stepped up to make her first lift, the 2018 Games gold medallist had increased her aim to 84kg - no one had managed more than 72 kgs. With a best of 88kg in snatch, in her second lift, she had shattered the Commonwealth Games record, the Games record and equalled her National record in snatch. If she came in an overwhelming favourite for the gold, the snatch made clear why. It also made clear India were headed towards their first gold medal in Birmingham. Commonwealth Games: India schedule , Results , Medals tally In the end, Chanu posted a Games record 113kg in the Clean & Jerk as well and had the job done with the first lift. Eventually, her total of 201kg also proved to be a Games Record. The Tokyo Oly

Sanket later went onto say that he felt disappointed on not winning the gold amidst an injury setback. Weightlifter Gururaja Poojary too won a medal, winning bronze in the men’s 61kg weight category. Day three of the Commonwealth Games promises more exciting action, with India taking on arch-rivals Pakistan in the women’s T20 cricket competition on Sunday. KL Rahul clarifies fitness concerns: 'Aim to recover as quickly as possible and be available for selection'

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the three ODIs against Zimbabwe away from home. The side that will be led by Shikhar Dhawan had a few prominent names such as Deepak Chahar and Washington Sundar making a comeback while Rahul Tripathi has also been called-up. On the other hand, the right-handed batter KL Rahul wasn't included in the squad for the bilateral series that begins on 18th August, 2022 in Harare. Rahul's omission raised some eyebrows and it was further reported that the batter has been left out due to injury. But, KL has now made the clarification in a social media post. "I wanted to clarify a couple of things about my health and fitness. My surgery in June was successful and I had begun training with the hope of returning to national duty for the team's tour to West Indies. Unfortunately, as I was nearing a return to full fitness, I tested positive for COVID-19. This naturally pushes things back by a couple of weeks,

England vs South Africa live score: Second T20 International

Toss  | England have won the toss and chose to field first. Playing XI: South Africa:  Quinton de Kock(w), Reeza Hendricks, Rilee Rossouw, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller(c), Tristan Stubbs, Andile Phehlukwayo, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi England:  Jason Roy, Jos Buttler(w/c), Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, Richard Gleeson, Reece Topley England will look to continue their dominance over the Proteas in T20Is as the second T20I kick starts at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. The first match was a batting-heavy match as sixes were seen raining all over the ground. The pitch at the Sophia Gardens is expected to be a bit sticky as usual. This might result in batters struggling to score freely. But the manner in which batters have adapted to the T20I format, no wicket seems improbable for a high-scoring match. The Proteas will look to level the series to go in the third match with some purpose and

Commonwealth Games: COVID-19 positive rate low till now, nothing to worry according to Medical Advisor

Birmingham: About a dozen athletes are expected to test positive for COVID-19 on a daily basis at the Games Village but that's not very alarming, assured Commonwealth Games medical advisor Dr Peter Harcourt. More than 5000 athletes from 72 nations and territories will compete in the Games spread over 11 days with the opening ceremony scheduled for Thursday. "About a dozen a day are returning positive but 1200-1400 athletes go through COVID-19 testing process every day. So it gives you an idea, it's not a huge number, Dr. Harcourt told a media conference here. Hopeful of a smooth conduct of the event, he said the organising committee has put their best foot forward in creating a safe environment. "Things that we have got in place is there's an RT-PCR test for individual travel to Birmingham and then there is an RT-PCR test on arrival. If there's a history of COVID, then the vaccination status of COVID would be scanned, so that we can make a good clear unde

Formula 2: Jehan Daruvala finishes seventh in feature race of French Grand Prix after second spot in sprint race

Le Castellet : Indian racer Jehan Daruvala started the 'feature race' from 10th on the grid but fought his way up to the seventh spot in Formula 2 French Grand Prix on Sunday. Earlier on Saturday, Jehan secured his sixth podium of the season, finishing second in the French round of the Formula 2 championship here. It was his fifth second-place finish this season. The 23-year-old, who races for Italian team Prema, was robbed of a potential fourth F2 victory by a post-race penalty in the last round in Austria. "It's good to be back on the podium what happened in Silverstone and Austria. We were struggling with pace down the straights but had some good battles to finish second," Jehan said. "We would have finished even higher in the feature race with our strategy to run a long first stint but we gambled on a safety car and stayed out a bit longer than ideal. Other than that, it was a solid weekend for us. We still have some areas to work on and I'm confi

England all-rounder Ben Stokes announced his retirement from ODI cricket and played his last fixture for the side against South Africa on Tuesday. World Athletics Championship 2022: Avinash Sable finishes 11th in men's 3000m steeplechase final

India's Avinash Sable finished 11th in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event at the World Athletics Championship 2022 in Hayward Field, Oregon. Sable clocked a timing of 8:31.75 in the finals, while he had finished third in his heat with a timing of 8:18.75 to qualify for the main race of the men’s 3000m steeplechase. It was a slow race overall as Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali of Morroco won the race with a timing of 8:25.13. Lamecha Girma of Ethpisa who won the silver at the 2020 Olympics came second with a timing of 8:26.01. Kenya's Conseslus Kipruto, who won the world championship in 2019, came third and clocked a timing of 8:27.92. Avinash Sable was struck at the tail-end of a rather slow Oregon men's 3000m Steeplechase final and finished 11th in 8:31.75. India vs England 3rd ODI stat attack: Pandya joins elite all-rounder club, Pant's maiden ton and more

Hardik Pandya's all-round effort and Rishabh Pant's maiden ODI century led India to a five-wicket and a 2-1 series victory against England in the third One-Dayer in Manchester on Sunday. Pandya was the star with the ball in the first innings as his 4/24 limited England to 259 all out in 45.5 overs after the hosts were sent into bat first. Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who picked four wickets in the second ODI, also chipped in with a spell of 3/60. For England, Skipper Jos Buttler finally found some form with the bat as he top-scored with 60 runs while opener Jason Roy contributed 41. Chasing the total, India again suffered a top-order collapse at 38/3 by the beginning of the ninth over. The team's captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli (17 runs each) and Shikhar Dhawan (1) disappointed again with dismal returns. Suryakumar Yadav also had an unforgettable outing with just 16 runs against his name. The Indian heavyweight batting failure was triggered by last-match star Reece Topley

But it was Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant who came in for the rescue and stitched a partnership of 133 runs for the fifth wicket before Pandya departed for 71 off 55 eventually. But Pant continued his form and took the team over the line and also remained unbeaten at a 113-ball 125. "Hopefully I remember (this knock) for the rest of my life. I was focusing on one ball at a time when I was batting. When your team is under pressure and you bat like that .. something I aspire to do. I always enjoy playing in England, at the same time enjoy the atmosphere and the situation. The more you play the more experience you gain," he said during the post-match presentation.
