Neeraj Chopra makes history as he attains World No 1 spot in men's javelin throw rankings

Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra on Monday reached new heights in his career, claiming the number one spot in the updated men’s javelin throw rankings. Neeraj now has 1455 points to his name, taking the No 1 spot from defending world champion Andersen Peters, who now has 1433 points. Jakub Vadlejch, who won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, occupies third place with 1416 points. On 30 August last year, Neeraj had attained second place in the rankings, and had been behind Andersen Peters ever since. And in September 2022, the 25-year-old had won the Diamond League 2022 finals in Zurich, thereby becoming the first Indian to do so. Chopra has started the new season on a strong note, winning the Doha Diamond League earlier in May with a throw of 88.67m. Chopra will next be in action at the FBK Games in the Netherlands from 4 June. That will be followed by the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland’s Turku from 13 June. Watch: Kohli throws bottle, Siraj gets emotional as Shubman Gill's ton knocks RCB out of IPL 2023

Royal Challengers Bangalore suffered a heartbreaking end to their IPL 2023 campaign as a defeat at the hands of Gujarat Titans on Sunday knocked them out of the tournament. Former captain Virat Kohli looked furious at the defeat as the team finished another season without the IPL title. IPL 2023:  Full coverage  |  Points table  |  Schedule  |  Results  |  Orange Cap  |  Purple Cap RCB began the day as the favourites for the fourth spot as three teams including Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals fought to enter the playoffs. After MI defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the afternoon game, all RCB needed for playoffs qualification was a victory over the defending champions GT. Bangalore had a better NRR (net run rate) than MI and a victory on Sunday would have been enough. However, RCB were stunned by an unbeaten century by Shubamn Gill as he ended their hopes. IPL: Gill outperforms Kohli as GT end RCB’s campaign in Bengaluru It began on a good note as Virat Kohli made 101 not out a

IPL 2023: Shubman Gill outperforms Virat Kohli as GT end RCB's campaign in Bengaluru

Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday delivered the knockout punch to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at a packed M Chinnaswamy Stadium, as the league stage of the Indian Premier League (IPL) came to a close. IPL 2023:  Full coverage  |  Points table  |  Schedule  |  Results  |  Orange Cap  |  Purple Cap Mumbai Indians (MI) had beaten Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight wickets earlier on Sunday, and RCB knew they had to win in order to qualify for the playoffs, but this season, it was just not meant to be. Virat Kohli notched up yet another century as he finished the tournament with 639 runs from 14 matches, six fifties and two centuries. One year is a long time, and around this time last year, all Kohli had were two fifties in IPL 2022. It’s safe to say Kohli has peaked at the right time, but collectively as a unit, RCB have struggled this season, and that lack of ability to fire in unison has cost them the playoffs. Drizzle at the Chinnaswamy Stadium delayed the contest by almost 90 mi

IPL 2023, Kolkata Knight Riders season review: Rinku’s coming of age a big takeaway for KKR in a sub-par campaign

Kolkata Knight Riders’ run to the final of the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) appears a distant memory now, with the ‘Purple Army’ having now gone two seasons in a row without reaching the playoffs. IPL 2023:  Full coverage  |  Points table  |  Schedule  |  Results  |  Orange Cap  |  Purple Cap Kolkata had an outside chance of sneaking into the top four when they hosted Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the final game of the season at the Eden Gardens on Saturday. Not only would they need a big victory over Lucknow to not only go level with Rajasthan Royals but to eclipse their Net Run Rate, they would also need Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to lose their final games in the Sunday double-header. The possibility went out of the window after Lucknow Super Giants recovered from a shaky start, riding on a game-changing 58 off 30 to post a challenging 176/8 on the board, meaning Kolkata would have had to chase the 177-run target down inside nine overs to still

IPL 2023, Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Gujarat Titans, Highlights: Gill helps GT beat RCB as MI make playoffs

RCB vs GT match summary: Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 104 outshone Virat Kohli’s 101 as Gujarat Titans beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets to end RCB’s hopes of qualifying for the IPL 2023 playoffs. RCB’s loss meant that Mumbai Indians, who had beaten Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier on Sunday, qualified as the fourth team in the playoffs. The confirmed four teams in the playoffs are GT, CSK, LSG and MI. Having been asked to bat, Virat Kohli (101*) and Faf du Plessis (28) forged a 67-run stand for the first wicket before the RCB skipper departed. Glenn Maxwell (11) too failed to capitalise on his start. It was a 64-run stand between Kohli and Anuj Rawat that propelled RCB to 197/5. In reply, it was Shubman Gill who stole the momentum from RCB. RCB got the early breakthrough when Mohammed Siraj got rid of Wriddhiman Saha in the third over, but Gill and Vijay Shankar (53) forged 123 runs for the second wicket to help set the platform for the win. Dasun Shanaka (0) and David Miller

IPL 2023: Cameron Green, Akash Madhwal prove their worth as Mumbai Indians out-muscle Sunrisers Hyderabad

Cameron Green blasted his way to an unbeaten 100 after Akash Madhwal’s game-changing haul of 4/37 as Mumbai Indians (MI) hammered Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight wickets in Mumbai on Sunday to stay afloat in the race to the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs. IPL 2023:  Full coverage  |  Points table  |  Schedule  |  Results  |  Orange Cap  |  Purple Cap While Hyderabad were already eliminated from the playoffs race and were hoping to spoil Mumbai’s party in their final outing of the season, the five-time champions desperately needed to win the final game of the season at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium if they were to keep their campaign alive. And win they did in style, making short work of another 200-plus target and cruising to victory with two overs to spare that took them past Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to the fourth spot on the points table and ensured Rajasthan Royals were eliminated from the playoffs race. Madhwal shines yet again Sunrisers finally appeared to

IPL 2023: First reaction is satisfaction, says Krunal Pandya as LSG enter playoffs with one-run win over KKR

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper Krunal Pandya heaved a sight of relief after the team held its nerve to post a thrilling one-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Saturday, confirming their place in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs in the process. IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap LSG managed to overcome a shaky start after being invited to bat as well as a late scare from KKR middle-order batter Rinku Singh to pull off a thrilling one-run win at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens in the second game of the Saturday double-header. The win helped them go level with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on 17 points and confirm their place in the knockouts that take place next week. “First reaction is satisfaction. We never gave up, we were put under lot of pressure but credit to the boys,” he said at the post-match presentation. “At one stage, they were 61/1 but I’ve seen it before that at this level 2-3 tight overs and we’re in
