Serie A: Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini out for five months after tearing ligament in training

Milan: Veteran Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini will undergo surgery after tearing a ligament in his right knee in training, the Serie A champions announced on Friday.

The Turin club said that the defender had suffered the injury in training on Friday and that tests "showed a lesion of the anterior cruciate ligament."

"It will be necessary to have surgery in the coming days," said the club website.

Juventus did not give details of how long the 35-year-old would be sidelined, but according to reports in Italy, it could be up to five months.

The eight-time reigning champions have signed Dutch defender Matthijs De Ligt this season but the absence of Chiellini will be a blow.

Juventus can count on Leonardo Bonucci and Daniele Rugani in defence along with Turkey's Merih Demiral, signed from Sassuolo.

Chiellini scored the first goal of the Serie A season last Saturday as the champions kicked off their bid for a ninth consecutive title with a 1-0 win at Parma.

It was just the 27th goal in Chiellini's 14-year Juventus career.

The champions play last season's runners-up Napoli next Saturday in Turin and open their Champions League campaign at Atletico Madrid on 18 September.

Chiellini had also been called up by Italy coach Roberto Mancini for Euro 2020 qualifiers against Armenia and Finland.

Premier League: Ben Mee's header helps Burnley register win over Crystal Palace

Ben Mee marked his 300th league appearance for Burnley by clinching a 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace on Monday and keeping his team in an unexpected push for European qualification. A three-year wait for a goal ended for Mee with a header from Ashley Westwood’s free kick in the 62nd minute, moving Burnley up to eighth in the English Premier League — seven points from the Champions League places with six games to go. Burnley was without Jay Rodriguez — the match-winner against Watford on Thursday — and due to a lack of options Sean Dyche could replace him with only defender Erik Pieters. “Coming into the night with a depleted squad, with only one senior boy on the bench, and playing like we did tonight, it shows the character, it shows we’re together," Mee told Amazon Prime. “To get a goal is nice. I’ve had chances cleared off the line or good saves so it’s nice to finally get one in. "It wasn’t a great ball from Westy (Westwood), it wasn’t what we worked on but you’ve got...

Serie A: Cristiano Ronaldo-less Juventus held by Benevento; Inter Milan score three past Sassuolo

Milan: Juventus again showed their reliance on Cristiano Ronaldo as, with the superstar attacker absent, they drew 1-1 at promoted Benevento on Saturday, while Serie A title rivals Inter Milan beat high-flying Sassuolo 3-0 to move second. The champions' fifth draw in nine league matches leaves Andrea Pirlo's side fifth, three points behind leaders AC Milan who face Fiorentina on Sunday. Ronaldo did not play after scoring in Juventus's 2-1 victory over Ferencvaros on Tuesday which sealed their berth in the Champions League last 16. "Every team is addicted to Ronaldo, even at Real Madrid he scored a lot," said Pirlo, describing the Portuguese star as "a catalyst". "He is an important player and it's normal that he makes you win games, but even without Ronaldo we have to be good at winning games." Alvaro Morata and Paulo Dybala started up front in Ronaldo's absence, which Pirlo put down to "tiredness". "(Ronaldo) had...
