Naomi Osaka to play both US Open as well as tuneup event before Grand Slam, says player’s agent

New York: Two-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka is planning to play at the US Open and the hard-court tuneup at the same site earlier in August.

Osaka's agent, Stuart Duguid, said Thursday that the former No 1-ranked player will enter both tournaments the US Tennis Association is holding in Flushing Meadows.

He would not comment on additional scheduling plans for Osaka. She won the 2018 US Open and followed that with a title at the 2019 Australian Open.

The current No 1 woman, Ashleigh Barty, withdrew from the US Open because she’s not comfortable with traveling during the coronavirus pandemic. The Grand Slam tournament is scheduled for 31 August to 13 September.

Other players have expressed concern about traveling to the United States, where more than 150,000 people have died from COVID-19. The virus is spiking in some parts of the country.

Osaka was not on the entry list announced Wednesday for the Western & Southern Open, which is scheduled for 20-28 August and was moved from Cincinnati to the same hard courts at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center that host the US Open. But she can still get in via a wild-card invitation.

No sanctioned professional tennis events have been played since March because of the coronavirus. Both the women’s and men’s tours plan to return in August. The women’s tour still aims to return next week at Palermo, Italy.

A three-year wait for a goal ended for Mee with a header from Ashley Westwood’s free kick in the 62nd minute, moving Burnley up to eighth in the English Premier League — seven points from the Champions League places with six games to go. Burnley was without Jay Rodriguez — the match-winner against Watford on Thursday — and due to a lack of options Sean Dyche could replace him with only defender Erik Pieters. “Coming into the night with a depleted squad, with only one senior boy on the bench, and playing like we did tonight, it shows the character, it shows we’re together," Mee told Amazon Prime. “To get a goal is nice. I’ve had chances cleared off the line or good saves so it’s nice to finally get one in. "It wasn’t a great ball from Westy (Westwood), it wasn’t what we worked on but you’ve got...
