IPL 2020: 'We still need to do a bit to make the playoffs', says RR captain Steve Smith after win over KXIP

Abu Dhabi: A seven-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab ensured Rajasthan Royals maintained their new-found momentum in the ongoing IPL but skipper Steve Smith acknowledged they still "need to do a bit" for keeping their play-offs prospects alive. A few days before Friday night's victory over KXIP, RR had beaten defending champions and this edition's in-from team, Mumbai Indians, by eight wickets. "The season has ebbed and flowed, yes. Would have been nice to have a couple of wins in the middle. We still need to do a bit to make the playoffs, and we need things to go our way," Smith said at the presentation ceremony. "Having said that, if that happens, we are playing very good cricket," he added. The Australian run-machine was a happy man after his side notched up back-to-back wins but said they still have a job at hand as they face Kolkata Knight Riders in their final league match. On Sanju Samson's run-out on 48 against KXIP, Smith said, &q

Alexis Vastine International: Boxers Amit Panghal, Sanjeet strike gold; Kavinder Bisht secures silver

New Delhi:  World silver-medallist Amit Panghal (52kg) and Sanjeet (91kg) struck gold in their first competition after a coronavirus-forced break, claiming the top honours at the Alexis Vastine International Boxing Tournament in Nantes, France. Amit, also an Asian Games champion, defeated American Rene Abraham 3-0 with a dominating performance. Sanjeet, a former India Open gold-medallist, too put up a clinical show to get past Frenchman Soheb Bouafia in his summit clash and secure a gold. However, Asian silver-medallist Kavinder Singh Bisht (57kg) settled for a silver medal after going down to local favourite Samuel Kistohurry in a split 2-1 verdict. India had earlier secured three bronze medals through four-time Asian medallist Shiva Thapa (63kg), Sumit Sangwan (81kg) and Satish Kumar (+91kg). All three of them lost in the semifinal stage. This was the first international competition that Indian boxers featured in since the Olympic qualifiers in Jordan in March. In that event, n

Formula 1 proposes record 23 races for 2021 season, including one in Saudi Arabia

Imola: Formula One has put a brave face on the coronavirus pandemic by publishing a proposed programme on Friday of a record 23 Grand Prix for the 2021 season, including one in Saudi Arabia. The previous record for races in a season stands at 21. Twenty-two races were slated for 2020 but the pandemic reduced that to 17. The programme reveals several sets of three races in successive weekends, something which is likely to stretch the teams. "It would represent a huge job for the mechanics," said Christian Horner, team principal of Red Bull. "This is 23 weeks away from home. We are approaching saturation point at which we would need two teams," said the Briton. While the drivers would need to be at every race, other teams are also thinking of switching their mechanics. "We hope to set up a rotation system so that no one has to go to all the races," said Williams team principal Simon Roberts. His AlphaTauri counterpart, Franz Tost, is of a similar min

Bundesliga: Schalke's winless run extends to 22 games after 1-1 draw against VfB Stuttgart

Berlin: Schalke‘s long wait for a win stretched to 22 games after letting Stuttgart come back to draw 1-1 in the Bundesliga on Friday. Malick Thiaw put the Gelsenkirchen-based club in front for the first time this season, but a penalty from Nicolás González earned the visitors a point and extended Schalke’s club-record run without a victory. Schalke scored through a set-piece in the 30th minute, when 19-year-old Finnish defender Malick peeled free at the far post to head in Amine Harit’s free kick for his first Bundesliga goal. Stuttgart had looked more like scoring, however. The visitors had to wait 10 minutes into the second half before they were awarded a penalty through VAR. Schalke defender Salif Sané blocked Nicolás González’s header with his outstretched arm, and González stepped up to equalize from the spot in the 56th. Stuttgart remained the better side. Schalke goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow prevented defeat with a late save to deny Gonzalo Castro. New Schalke coach Manuel

IPL 2020: KXIP skipper KL Rahul says dew factor in second half made it tough for bowlers to defend total against RR

Abu Dhabi: Kings XI Punjab captain KL Rahul on Friday blamed his side's inability to defend a decent total against Rajasthan Royals in their IPL match to the dew factor, saying it made life miserable for his bowlers, especially the spinners as they struggled to grip the ball. Sent in to bat, KXIP posted a decent 185 for four but RR overhauled the target without much ado, scoring 186 for three in 17.3 overs. "It was a horrible toss to lose to be honest. It did get very easy to bat later on. There was a lot of dew in the second half and that made it a bit tough for the bowlers to grip the ball," Rahul said at the post-match presentation. "When you're operating with two leg spinners like we are, it does make things difficult. Don't think we bowled that badly but need to operate better with the wet ball. The dew has been unpredictable this season. You can't prepare for it but need to adapt to it." The seven-wicket loss snapped KXIP's string of

IPL 2020: Rajasthan Royals' overseas quartet finally come to the party in crucial win over KXIP

Ben Stokes, Steven Smith, Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer. As far as overseas foursomes go, there are few more loaded combinations in the IPL. As far as weight of team workload is concerned, there are, perhaps, no combinations as skewed as this one. And yet, despite having featured together in the majority of Rajasthan Royals’ games since the start of IPL 2019, Friday evening at Abu Dhabi was the first time that RR had each one of Stokes, Smith and Buttler scoring more than 20 runs in the same game, to go with Archer picking up two wickets. For a side as overly dependent on its overseas contingent, it makes sense that the Royals started the day at joint-bottom of the points table – Archer aside, their quartet had been rather quiet all season. Stokes, prior to his jaw-dropping match-winning century against Mumbai Indians on Sunday, had returned 110 runs off 103 balls in his first five outings; Smith, after starting the season with back-to-back fifties at Sharjah, had managed all of 157 ru

Vienna Open 2020: Novak Djokovic suffers heavy loss to Lorenzo Sonego but insists securing top spot is priority

Vienna: Novak Djokovic shrugged off his heaviest defeat on Friday by insisting he had achieved his goal of wrapping up the year-end world number one spot for a record-equalling sixth time. Djokovic was stunned 6-2, 6-1 by Italian lucky loser Lorenzo Sonego in the quarter-finals of the Vienna ATP tournament. But having won two rounds in the Austrian capital, 33-year-old Djokovic is virtually guaranteed equalling Pete Sampras's record of securing the year-ending top ranking for the sixth time. "Clinching the year-end number one had an effect on me," Djokovic told a news conference. "I have done what I came here for, securing the number one. And I'm completely fine with today's result. "I'm healthy and looking forward to a strong finish in London (the season-ending ATP Finals)". Italian Sonego, ranked 42 and who had initially lost in qualifying last weekend, is the first lucky loser ever to beat Djokovic. The only other time Djokovic had wo

IPL 2020 LIVE Streaming RCB vs SRH: When and where to watch Dream11 IPL on Disney + Hotstar and broadcast timings in India and UAE

Royal Challengers Bangalore take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in match 52 of IPL 2020 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Saturday. RCB are second in the league table with 14 points from 12 matches while SRH are at the sixth spot with 10 points from same number of matches. A playoff spot is at stake for RCB in the match. The equation is pretty simple for them, win the match and qualify for the playoff. However, for that to happen, RCB would need to beat their current losing streak which is now two-game long. Virat Kohli and Co have lost their last two matches against CSK and MI. And while the clash against SRH is not a do-or-die situation for RCB, with one more game in hand, a defeat would adversely impact their net run rate. SRH, on the other hand, would be determined to put up a tough challenge. The Hyderabad franchise could reach 14 points with a win against RCB and MI in their last match. And could qualify for the playoff if RCB, DC, or KXIP don't reach 16 points and SRH possess a

Delhi Capitals lock horns with Mumbai Indians in the 51st match of the Indian Premier League at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. At one point in time, Delhi Capitals were cruising and looked a formidable side who had the perfect balance and the one to beat. Now, the tables have turned. They are struggling to get a win on the board and have lost their last three matches. Their batting has let them down big time. Their last two totals read - 131 all out and 135/9. Their problems have continued. One of the openers hasn't clicked. Ajinkya Rahane has flopped, while Prithvi Shaw has lost his touch. The rest of the batting order too needs to step up. Marcus Stoinis has gone cold, Hetmyer has been inconsistent. Rishabh Pant hasn't found the perfect balance between defence and attack. Head coach Ricky Ponting admitted that chasing is a concern and DC need to hit the reset button. "It's been a concern. When we decide to bowl first, we've given away big totals. W

IPL 2020: Royal Challengers Bangalore aim to bounce back, seal playoff berth with win over Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sharjah : With a playoff spot at stake, Royal Challengers Bangalore need to shrug off the disappointment of two back-to-back defeats and put up a strong challenge against strong-willed Sunrisers Hyderabad when the two teams clash on Saturday. But it would be easier said than done since SRH are brimming with confidence after their crushing win over Delhi Capitals. Chennai Super Kings, which is the only team to be out of the reckoning, has spiced up the playoff race with their last-ball win over Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday night. Going by current standings, RCB are better-placed at No 2 and they need to win one of their remaining two games  —  against SRH or DC  —  to make the cut. Even if RCB lose both their matches and stay on 14 points, they can still qualify. But for that, they need favourable results from other games. RCB cannot afford to lose both their last two games as it will affect their NRR, resulting in their elimination if other teams on 14 points have higher net

Ritu Phogat cruises to third straight MMA win, stays on course for a shot at world title

New Delhi : Ritu Phogat could well be dwadling on a bean bag in her Singapore apartment, sipping coffee, flipping through a book, or simply watching the world go by through her stainless window. Instead, here she was, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, straddling Nou Srey Pov – her left arm calmly tucked under Phogat’s left knee that allowed the latter’s right hand a free run – in an MMA equivalent of a perfect Friday evening. “It was an amazing bout. I am really happy to be able to pull off everything that me and my coach had planned,” she would beam shortly after completing her third straight win in what was billed as a classic grappler versus striker showdown . Two and a half rounds, or roughly seven minutes is all it took for Phogat to canter to a Technical Knock-Out in this One: Inside The Matrix promotion; a commanding, ruthless performance that never gave the Cambodian Kun Khmer world champion a whiff. Ritu Phogat looks DOMINANT in her return to the Circle, stopping Nou Srey P

IPL 2020: With playoff berth secured, dangerous Mumbai Indians look to spoil Delhi Capitals' party

Dubai : With their playoff berth secured, defending champions Mumbai Indians would look to add to the woes of Delhi Capitals, who are on a three-match losing streak, and consolidate their position at the top when the two teams face each other in IPL 2020 on Saturday. Chennai Super Kings' six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday sealed MI's playoff berth. The defending champions are currently on 16 points. With an excellent net run rate (NRR) currently, they are almost certain to finish in the top-two. Despite three defeats on the trot against Kings XI Punjab, KKR and Sunrisers Hyderabad, DC are placed third with 14 points from 12 games, courtesy their consistent run in the first phase of the league. The three defeats should come as an eye-opener for DC as they cannot afford to take things lightly and need at least a win to seal their playoff place. But it won't be an easy task as their last two games are against the top two teams on the table  —  MI and Roy

Premier League: Teenager Rayan Ait-Nouri marks debut with goal as Wolves beat Crystal Palace to go third

Wolverhampton: Teenage defender Rayan Ait-Nouri marked his Wolves debut with a goal as the Midlands club beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at Molineux on Friday to move up into third place in the Premier League. Victory put Wolves level on points with the leading Merseyside duo of Everton and reigning champions Liverpool ahead of the bulk of this weekend's fixtures. France Under-21 left-back Ait-Nouri joined Wolves on a season-long loan— with an option to buy— from Ligue 1 Angers earlier in October. It took him just 18 minutes to open the scoring with a first-time shot. Portuguese winger Daniel Podence doubled Wolves' lead nine minutes later, when he turned in Pedro Neto's cross from close range. "For Rayan Ait-Nouri, I am really pleased because it is the first game and what a better start can he have?" Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo told the BBC . "He is 19 with a lot of things to improve. He has to get so many things on board and that's the work."

IPL 2020: Ruturaj Gaikwad is one of the most talented players going around, says MS Dhoni

Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Thursday heaped rich praise on Ruturaj Gaikwad, saying the young opener is “one of the most talented players going around”. Gaekwad scored his second straight half-century to set up a six-wicket win over KKR. “(The changes) are a conscious effort. We want to give games to people who haven’t played and we need them to grab those opportunities. Ruturaj we’d seen him in the nets, but then he got COVID positive and took 20 days. Unfortunate but he’ll remember this season,” said Dhoni at the post-match presentation. “He’s one of the most talented players going around. What makes it difficult is he’s not somebody who speaks a lot! So sometimes it becomes difficult for the management to gauge a player.” Gaekwad, who had tested COVID-19 positive in the lead up to the tournament, has all the shots and his style of play is pleasing to the eye. Things did not look bright for him after he failed in his first three innings (0, 5, 0). “Once h

IPL 2020: Morgan, Rana, and two decisions that may have derailed KKR's playoffs bid

KKR innings, 8.3 overs: Sunil Narine is the second man out with the scoreboard reading 60. With two slow left-armers and one leggie in the opposition attack, it’s got to be another left-handed batsman joining Nitish Rana in the middle. And it is… just not Eoin Morgan, but Rinku Singh – playing his first T20 since 17 November 2019. CSK innings, 9 overs: The strategic timeout comes and goes, with CSK 58/1. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ambati Rayudu are in the middle. With the target 115 runs away, it’s got to be the spinners continuing to keep a check on the scoring. And it is… just not Sunil Narine or Varun Chakravarthy, but Nitish Rana – who’s bowled one over in the entire season. Facing Chennai Super Kings in Dubai on Thursday, Kolkata Knight Riders played good cricket – perhaps the better cricket of the two sides – for at least 25 overs of the contest. Unfortunately, in the middle of both the innings, they made tactical calls that defined the course of the game – with their captain, and the

Vienna Open 2020: Dimitrov knocks out Tsitsipas to reach quarter-finals; Thiem beats Garin

Russia's Andrey Rublev needed just eight minutes to reach the Vienna ATP quarter-finals on Thursday when Italian teenage opponent Jannik Sinner was forced to quit. Fifth-seeded Rublev was ahead 2-1 in the first set when the 19-year-old world number 43 retired with a right foot injury. Rublev, now in his ninth quarter-final of this truncated season, will face second seed and defending champion Dominic Thiem for a spot in the last-four. US Open winner Thiem eased past Chile's Cristian Garin 6-3, 6-2. Italian lucky loser Lorenzo Sonego defeated Poland's Hubert Hurkacz 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (7/2) and next plays world number one Novak Djokovic. Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov knocked out third seed and reigning ATP Finals champion Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-7 (5/7), 6-4, 6-3 to record his first top 10 win of the year. "I was focused, but he went for it," said world number 20 Dimitrov. "In the tie-break a few close calls here and there went his way. But I kept on believin

Alexander Zverev denies accusations he attacked ex-girlfriend during US Open 2019

Paris: German tennis star Alexander Zverev on Thursday said accusations by an ex-girlfriend that he had attacked her in New York last year were "simply not true". World number seven Zverev insisted claims made by Olga Sharypova that he tried to "strangle" her while at the US Open were "unfounded" and made him "very sad". Sharypova did not initially name Zverev in her Instagram post but later confirmed to Russian media that she was referring to her fellow 23-year-old. Sharypova claimed also that her head was hit against a wall and that she was forced to flee a hotel barefoot. "The unfounded accusations of my ex-girlfriend Olga Sharypova...make me very sad," Zverev, who reached this year's US Open final, said in a statement. "I very much regret that she makes such statements because the accusations are simply not true. "We had a relationship, but it ended a long time ago. Why Olga is making these accusations now, I ju

Europa League: AC Milan, Arsenal register commanding victories; Tottenham lose to Antwerp

AC Milan cruised past Sparta Prague 3-0 for their second straight win in the Europa League on Thursday, while Tottenham fell to a surprising 1-0 loss at newcomer Antwerp. Milan easily overcame a missed penalty by Zlatan Ibrahimovic to remain unbeaten in 23 games in all competitions, dating back to least season. Tottenham saw their 10-match unbeaten run end, despite having Gareth Bale in the starting lineup for a second straight time in the competition. Fellow Premier League clubs captured their second straight win. Leicester beat AEK Athens 2-1 away while Arsenal scored three goals in a four-minute span either side of halftime in a 3-0 victory over Irish club Dundalk. A minute of silence was held ahead of the game between Nice and Hapoel Beer Sheva to honor the three victims of a knife attack in the French city earlier Thursday. The players from both teams wore black armbands during the game, which the hosts won 1-0. Benfica and Rangers earned their second straight victories while

Pakistan vs Zimbabwe: Babar Azam and Co aim to sweep ODI series; Chamu Chibhabha hopeful for giving tough fight

Pakistan captain Babar Azam has set their sights on sweeping Zimbabwe in the one-day international series that opens their World Cup Super League campaigns from Friday. The International Cricket Council has introduced the league to bring context to ODI cricket. The seven leading teams in the league will directly qualify for the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India. The league features 13 countries playing four home and away three-match ODI series. “We will try to whitewash them (Zimbabwe) by playing according to our strength,” Babar said by video on Thursday at Pindi Cricket Stadium. Pakistan boasts just one ODI loss against Zimbabwe in the last 19 games. The streak includes a 2-0 win at home in 2015 when Zimbabwe became the first full ICC member to tour Pakistan since the 2009 terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka team in Lahore. Pakistan suffered a setback when Babar’s deputy, Shadab Khan, was ruled out of Friday’s opening match because of a leg injury the allrounder sustained during an

IPL 2020: Steve Smith's Rajasthan Royals take on rampaging Kings XI Punjab in must-win game

A rampaging Kings XI Punjab would look to extend their exceptional run and inch closer to a playoffs berth while Rajasthan Royals would be desperate to stay alive in the tournament when the two sides clash in a an IPL match, on Friday. It has been a dramatic turnaround for the KL Rahul-led side after a string a losses earlier in the tournament. They have managed to weave together five consecutive wins against the top four sides in the tournament, infusing life into their campaign. They are in fourth position with 12 points from as many games, while the Royals have slumped to the penultimate spot with 10 points having suffered seven defeats from 12 outings. It’s a mad scramble for the playoffs. With Mumbai Indians all but through, six teams are in the hunt for the remaining three spots. The Royals can’t afford to slip up, if they lose on Friday they will be out of the reckoning while a defeat for Punjab will dent their chances for a top-four finish. They would expect their skipper

Kings XI Punjab take on Rajasthan Royals in the 50th match of the Indian Premier League in Abu Dhabi. It's another do-or-die game for Rajasthan Royals as they take on KXIP. RR sit second from the bottom with 10 points from 12 matches while KXIP are on 12 points from 12 matches. The manner of win against table-toppers Mumbai Indians would have given RR a lot of confidence. They won the match by eight wickets and 10 balls to spare, chasing down 196 against a strong Mumbai bowling line-up. Ben Stokes finally fired at the top with a brilliant century. He struggled earlier to start off but his move to open the batting finally worked for RR. Their biggest concern though is Steve Smith's form; he's been very inconsistent and has had scores of 16 not out, 19, and 11 in the last three innings. Overall, he's averaged just 25.09. RR would need him to get back to his best as soon as possible. Jofra Archer has been excellent in the bowling department and the spinners - Shreyas Go
