Alexander Zverev denies accusations he attacked ex-girlfriend during US Open 2019

Paris: German tennis star Alexander Zverev on Thursday said accusations by an ex-girlfriend that he had attacked her in New York last year were "simply not true".

World number seven Zverev insisted claims made by Olga Sharypova that he tried to "strangle" her while at the US Open were "unfounded" and made him "very sad".

Sharypova did not initially name Zverev in her Instagram post but later confirmed to Russian media that she was referring to her fellow 23-year-old.

Sharypova claimed also that her head was hit against a wall and that she was forced to flee a hotel barefoot.

"The unfounded accusations of my ex-girlfriend Olga Sharypova...make me very sad," Zverev, who reached this year's US Open final, said in a statement.

"I very much regret that she makes such statements because the accusations are simply not true.

"We had a relationship, but it ended a long time ago. Why Olga is making these accusations now, I just don't know.

"I really hope that the two of us will find a way to deal with each other again in a reasonable and respectful way."

Zverev also revealed Thursday that he is to become a father with former partner Brenda Patea.

"The last few days were quite challenging for me," he admitted.

Premier League: Ben Mee's header helps Burnley register win over Crystal Palace

Ben Mee marked his 300th league appearance for Burnley by clinching a 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace on Monday and keeping his team in an unexpected push for European qualification. A three-year wait for a goal ended for Mee with a header from Ashley Westwood’s free kick in the 62nd minute, moving Burnley up to eighth in the English Premier League — seven points from the Champions League places with six games to go. Burnley was without Jay Rodriguez — the match-winner against Watford on Thursday — and due to a lack of options Sean Dyche could replace him with only defender Erik Pieters. “Coming into the night with a depleted squad, with only one senior boy on the bench, and playing like we did tonight, it shows the character, it shows we’re together," Mee told Amazon Prime. “To get a goal is nice. I’ve had chances cleared off the line or good saves so it’s nice to finally get one in. "It wasn’t a great ball from Westy (Westwood), it wasn’t what we worked on but you’ve got...

England vs New Zealand: Joe Root aims for Black Caps and India sweep ahead of Ashes

Joe Root believes there will be no better way for England to prepare to regain the Ashes in Australia later this year than by completing a home clean sweep of New Zealand and India. The England captain will lead his side in the first of a two-match series against New Zealand at Lord's on Wednesday, with five more Tests against India before the English season is finished. India, top of the Test rankings, and second-placed New Zealand will contest the inaugural World Test Championship final at Southampton, southern England, later this month. England, and many of their supporters, have long given the impression that matches against arch-rivals Australia are the only Tests that really count, with everything else a 'warm-up'. But such a viewpoint was labelled "limited, narrow and delusional" by former England captain Mike Atherton in The Times on Tuesday. Root, however, saw no conflict between England's short and long-term goals. "There's going to b...
